Property prices have increased helped by a planning law in 1993 that decreased development and aimed to ensure that any new property development was sympathetic to its environment and surroundings. Partly as a result of this, property tends to be of a higher quality than in Spain and prices are also generally higher.

The Algarve in the south is the most popular area but other favourites include Cascais, Estoril, the Obidos area, and the Costa Verde. Inland Beita Litoral is also being developed.
